Guess Who? 1940 Basketball coach

Clyde Renfrow, Principal Daniel Renfrow’s Granddad, taught the Junior High children in the same building Cedaredge Elementary School is located today. His room was in the south-east corner of the building, and he taught there in 1940. He also coached the Junior High basketball.

Family Legacy at CES

Girls had to wear dresses Monday through Friday. Slacks could be worn on Saturday. That rule was relaxed when I was in high school.

The building housed both Jr. High and High School. Jr. High was in the North end of the building, High School in the South.

Kids could leave the campus at lunch time. The choices for lunch were the lunch room, cost 35 cents per lunch or several businesses in town. Sheps Bakery was right across the street, and The Chocolate Shop and Sweet Spot were downtown.

Every Friday afternoon there was a pep rally. Jack Kehmeier, the social studies teacher, would jump in the air, spinning, and shouting Cedaredge would see a victory that weekend at what ever sports event there might be. Little did I know, Mr. Kehmeier would become my future father in law.

Girls were not allowed to participate in athletics. The Colorado Department of Education believed that it was not good for girls to be so physical. Girls participated through pep club and cheerleading.

I graduated in 1972, outside on the football field. My three children attended middle school in the old building. Two of my grandchildren have attended elementary school there as well.
